To the other side of Playa de las Americas are
Fanabe and El Duque. These resorts are the most upmarket in
Tenerife, and most of the island's most luxurious hotels are to be
found here. El Duque in particular has a very slick shopping centre
and one of the best beaches in Tenerife. The beaches in general are
smaller here than those at the big resorts, and there are lots of
pretty little coves for you to discover in your hire car where you
can get away from the crowds.
Right at the southern tip of the island is Los Gigantes. The resort is named after the towering cliff formations which give the resort its unique character. Originally a very small resort, it has grown in recent years and is an interesting alternative to the popular, more overcrowded southern resorts. It now has a good selection of hotels, but remains fairly unspoilt.
If you want nothing more than to escape the resorts of the south, then taking your hire car to the north of the island instead could be the answer. The climate is not as reliable as the south, but the scenery is more interesting, and the resorts more characterful.
The principal resort in northern Tenerife is Puerto de la Cruz. An old fishing village, Puerto de la Cruz has been sensitively developed to retain much of its original character whilst offering a good selection of modern, convenient accommodation.

Tenerife has a diverse selection of resorts
which range from loud and lively to tranquil and traditional. The
largest and most established resorts are to be found on the
island's south coast. Of these, Playa de las Americas is the
largest and most established.
Unfortunately, the lager lout reputation of las Americas continues to persist, and not without good reason. Some areas are rather run down, and street touts can be a problem. However, Americas does have the biggest and best night life scene in Tenerife, so you like to party, it's the best place to be. Veronicas, Tenerife's most famous club, is a good place to start. As the island's largest resort, Playa de las Americas also has the widest selection of accommodation, and you will find all types here. Playa de las Americas is also a good base from which to hire a car and try something else that the island has to offer?
Los Christianos, bordering las Americas on the eastern side, was originally a fishing village, but is now second in size only to las Americas itself. Again it's not a bad location from which to rent a car for the duration. It is similar to Americas, but has better beaches, including a huge man-made one which is excellent for families.
Unlike Americas, Los Christianos has a proper old town with typical Canarian architecture. It is from the port at Los Christianos that you can take hydrofoil ferry trips out to the smaller islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.
