The church of Cristo de la Laguna is another
particularly notable building, with a breathtaking interior.
Interestingly, La Laguna was the first city in the world to be
built on a geometric grid – far earlier than Milton Keynes! It is
therefore easy to navigate your way around, and the tourism office
provides free guided tours.
In recent years, La Laguna has evolved to cater for the tourist trade, though it is still far enough removed from the southern coastal resorts to escape the masses. Due in part to the university, and also a thriving cultural scene, it is in fact a very lively town.
Wander round the old centre and you will encounter a wealth of classic little tavernas serving delicious traditional fare. If you have time, rent a car and come up here and take a few hours to wander by the lake and admire the vistas of this special, if somewhat hidden, city.

The city of San Cristobal la Laguna (or La
Laguna for short, as it is commonly known), is Tenerife's second
city, and a hidden gem, going unnoticed by many of the crowds who
flock to the island's south. Take your hire car off to the north
west of Santa Cruz to find this town which was once the island's
capital.
Unlike its larger neighbour, La Laguna has a history dating back to the late 1400s, and its historical centre is so important that it has been designated a World Heritage Site. The city also houses La Laguna University, which caters for around 30,000 students. The city is often considered to be the cultural capital of the Canary Islands. There is a tram link to Santa Cruz, and Tenerife North airport is only a few miles away. You can pick up your hire car at Tenerife airport if you're planning on doing plenty of exploring
La Laguna's historical centre is a must see for any visitor to the city. There are some real architectural beauties to be discovered in and around the city's central core.
There are some beautiful palaces, principal of which are the Palacio Lercaro and the Palacio de Nava, equal in splendour to any in mainland Spain. The stunning cathedral is also well worth a visit.
