More about Santa Cruz, Tenerife
Culture, particularly music, is
integral to the existence of Santa Cruz. The stunning sail
boat-like Auditorio de Tenerife is an architectural symbol of the
Canary Islands.
It is the home of the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife and the Classical Music Festival of the Canary Islands. Regular concerts are put on here and one of these would round off a day in the capital in fine fashion!
Santa Cruz has many other activities to offer. You can take a cool walk in one of the beautiful botanical gardens, the largest of which are the Palmetum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Garcia de Sanabria.
As well as the shops (shopping is virtually duty free in Tenerife), there is the excellent Market of Our Lady of Africa. Make sure your hire car has a large boot. You'll probably be going home with more than you thought!

Tenerife's lively capital city,
Santa Cruz, offers many differing attractions to the visitor. With
Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), it is the principal city of the Canary
Islands, and the 21st largest in Spain. It has a very busy port –
cruise ships stop here on their way to the Caribbean. Santa Cruz is
also a great place to pick up your car hire as there is so much to
see.
One of Santa Cruz's most important and unique features is its carnival – The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is the most important carnival in Spain, and is so significant that it aspires to become a World Heritage Site.
The carnival usually begins in early February and lasts around a month. It encompasses all sorts of diverse cultural activities, and is a reason for visiting Tenerife on its own!
Santa Cruz has a historic centre, which also contains the main shopping area. The main street stretches uphill from the Plaza de Espana at the bottom. This area and its surrounds contain a reasonable selection of well known international chains.
However, the real charm of shopping and eating in Santa Cruz lies in going a little bit off the beaten track. Venture off the main street, and you are more likely to find designer boutiques, charming craft shops and authentic Spanish restaurants.
